For Maryknoll Brother Marty Shea, the civil war in Guatemala became not only the focus of his work, but also the focus of his life. Beginning in the 1980s, Shea lived among families in rural Guatemala and went with them as they were chased into Mexican refugee camps by powerful opposition forces. Shea was also there for the return of many families to Guatemala after the bloody civil war ended. Throughout his long journey, Shea kept a journal of photos and writings called "Save the Kids, Save their Stories" that chronicles the hope and faith he witnessed firsthand during these times of immense challenge.

In a recent wide-ranging conversation with Maryknoll Interactive Media, Brother Shea opened up about his life's work among the Guatemalan people.

The Easter Experience in The Field Afar – a Bengali Way of the Cross

Every year thousands of people take part in the pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Baromari, Bangladesh, an event that culminates with an elaborate "Way of the Cross" ceremony. This year, Maryknoll Father William McIntire, M.M., concelebrated the pilgrimage Mass at St. Leo's Parish in the Baromari Mission and Maryknoll Magazine was on hand to record exclusive video of the Bengali "Way of the Cross".
The sheer number of attendees is especially impressive considering the Catholics of Bangladesh are thought to only number 1% of the total population. As Father McIntire says, "the annual pilgrimage to the Shrine has helped to put this place on the Bangladesh Catholic map. I think many people will be surprised to learn that there is such a Catholic shrine in Bangladesh."

Maryknoll in Haiti: The Need Is Greater Than Ever

Haitian-born Father Romane St. Vil, M.M., recently led an assessment trip to the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, to better determine what Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers can do for the victims left devastated by the January earthquake. Upon his return, Fr. St. Vil had this to say about what the Maryknollers found: "Now you're not dealing with the dead, you're dealing with those people who are alive and with nothing. With no help." In response, Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers are now establishing a Rehabilitation and Trauma Treatment Center on a 7-hectare site that’s been bought for this purpose.
In this exclusive video segment, Father St. Vil talks about the trip, his own personal connection to Haiti, and what Maryknoll - and you - can do to help.

This year, as the procession weaved through the streets of Chinatown, parishioners also honored the 100th anniversary of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. The procession was the idea of a small group of parishioners. Over the years, participation in the procession has grown considerably. Built in 1801, the Church of the Transfiguration is the oldest Catholic Church in New York City. It has served Catholics from many ethnic and cultural backgrounds for more than 200 years.

The Reinstallation of The Maryknoll Time Capsule

The Maryknoll Society time capsule, removed and opened as part of the centennial commemoration, has been resealed and reinstalled to be opened again in 50 years. On January 3, members of the Maryknoll Society and employees gathered outside the Maryknoll Society Mission Center to witness this historic event. Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Superior General Fr. Edward Dougherty blessed the capsule and lead an intimate procession from inside the Society Center to place the time capsule in the cornerstone outside the Mission Center. The metal chest contains more than 50 items. Among the contents are centennial memorabilia from the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, including a DVD of the Maryknoll Centennial Mass held at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in New York City, and items from the Maryknoll Sisters (a sliver Chi Rho Ring and Metal Cross), the Maryknoll Lay Missioners (prayer card) and the Maryknoll Affiliates (letter from New York Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan).
